At the end of 1997, I went freelance, and finding myself busier than I had expected,
started my own company, The Added Resource. The idea was that I would act as a resource
for busy companies, like Saatchi’s, Ogilvy One, and KBW who would welcome help. I
wrote ads, brochures, websites, speeches, even half a dozen marketing guides for
Unilever, and with the help of Rupert Stubbs, we created airport posters, brochures,
videos and and even a TV commercial for Vodafone. We also wrote guides for their
phones in the days before phones became smart and users needed all the help they
could get. Here’s
something more fun - one of
our airport posters.
For a whlle, Vodafone was the world’s largest phone network. Rupert and I tried (and failed) to persuade them to run ads about Vodaland, the world’s biggest country. Then, when Vodafone wanted to announce new, more reasonable roaming charges, we tried to persuade them to take a leadership stance with ads like this - but they said No, they didn’t want to upset the EU.
